6 Practical Methods to Set Realistic Expectations.

Published by Chanpa Pal on

Understanding the life is key to setting realistic expectations.

Your life has no meaning without expectations. Expectation creates a relationship among people and makes us social animals. Realistic expectations make our lives simple and comfortable to live.

If you are living a human life and you have the desire to do something remarkable in life then you should have expectations.

Life becomes boring when you are not expecting anything from it.

Our expectations for getting a name, fame and money drive us to do wonderful jobs in life. Society becomes developed with our discoveries.

So, expectations are important to grow in life but it needs to be realistic.

The types of Expectations.

There are two types of expectations: expectations from others and self-expectation.

The desire of getting attention from others is not under your control. You can not tell other people to fulfil your desire but you can fulfil your practical wishes.

No matter how wealthy you are, you are always searching for happiness. Mental peace is the ultimate goal of this human life. There is a hidden wish of being peaceful behind every tiresome work.

We live among people because we are social animals. So there are always some expectations from others and ourselves. And when we expect unrealistically,  it ends up increasing anxiety and unhappiness.

How to Set Practical Expectations.

So here I will discuss 6 practical methods which could help you to set expectations realistically.

1. Understand Yourself.

It is a fact that nothing can make you happy until you try to be happy. And understanding everything is worthless if you don’t understand yourself.

The ignorant of self-knowledge often instigates us to judge others. The moment we understand ourselves, we stop judging others. We become compassionate for others then.

How to understand?

To understand ourselves, we need to understand our body, mind and intellect. We need to be aware of our feelings, emotions and thoughts.

If you become conscious of your emotions and understand them, you become emotionally intelligent. When you truly understand your emotions, you become compassionate to others.

Your self-understanding makes you aware before making any expectations from others. You see yourself in their places and stop wishing for impractical expectations from others.

Without understanding yourself, you could never make any practical decision. Practical desire makes life simple and easy. It helps you live a carefree life.

So the first step toward setting practical expectations is self-knowledge or self-understanding.

2. Be Honest.

Honesty always wins. You can never get real happiness if you are not honest. The result of dishonesty is that your life becomes complicated and burdened.

Most of the time we are not honest with ourselves. We usually tell lies even to our true selves. As a result, we become dishonest to ourselves and unknowingly we cheat ourselves.

Nothing can be kept secret from your mind. It knows everything that you do. It always tells you your lies but you ignore them. You wear a mask of loyalty and people accept you easily. They have also these masks of honesty.

When you tell lies to yourself, you deny the truth. Truthfulness is such a great quality that makes your life so light. You feel happy being truly honest.

Your honesty always shows you the right way. It causes pure happiness and true peace. And a happy mind never expects from others.

When happiness is within, you do not want anyone to make you happy. And only then you can set practical desires.

So be honest to live peacefully. Life becomes a gift when you are truly honest and you have an inner source of happiness.

3. Be Aware.

We need to be aware before expecting anything from others. If we become aware, we understand others’ situations easily. We gradually understand our thoughts and that of others. We come closer to the truth and life becomes happy.

Being aware means being aware of what is going on inside and outside. When we are conscious of what is going on in our minds, we easily understand others.

The moment you know others’ situations you understand that easily. You place yourself in their places before judging them.

When you see yourself in others, you share an immortal connection. And when we are connected to others how can we make any unrealistic expectations?

4. Discover Yourself.

Life is not as short as you think it. Life is the microcosm of the macrocosm. If you can discover different dimensions of your life, you can easily understand the universe.

There is nothing more interesting than discovering the secret of this life. In the journey of discovering yourself, you end up seeing yourself as a connected entity with the universe.

Your expectations reduce to zero because the universe is yours then. How can a person ask for money when he is the king of wealth?

When you know you are filled with everything, do you ask for anything else? You can enjoy this heaven-like happiness if you are on the way to discovering yourself.

All expectations become realistic when you discover yourself properly.

How to know that you are discovering yourself?

There are certain symptoms which indicate that you are on the way to knowing yourself. Foremost, your expectations become zero. Your life becomes simple and you are always in a happy mood. Calmness is always deep within you and your words become sweet for others.

You love yourself and others and you treat others in the way you would like to be treated. Gratitude becomes your daily habit and every day becomes a new start in your life.

On the whole, when your life becomes simple and you experience pure happiness and serenity, you are discovering yourself.

5. Accept Reality.

Our expectations become unrealistic because we don’t understand reality. Accepting reality is the ultimate way to live a happy and problem-free life.

If you ignore reality and start living in illusion, there is nothing which could make you happy and satisfied.

What do you mean by accepting reality?

It means understanding the law of this universe and acting according to that. The law of the universe is that if there is life so there is death also. This is the ultimate reality and you can not ignore that but we can understand the cycle of life and death.

So, when we see reality as it is and we accept it, we stop expecting unrealistically from others. We judge ourselves before judging others.

And then our expectations become reality-based and these realistic expectations help us to take life easily.

6. Be Independent.

Our expectations become impractical because we are dependent on others for our well-being. When you are physically, psychologically and emotionally dependent on others, there are always unrealistic expectations.

Then it would be best if you had others to fulfil your desires and when they fail to complete your wishes, you become hurt.

If you depend on others for your happiness, they may or may not fulfil your desire. But if you are independent in your happiness, it surely makes others happy.

The moment you are financially independent, you don’t expect financial support from others.

The more you are dependent on yourself, the more meaningful expectations you have from others. And then you can expect realistically from others and life.

Conclusion:

Life is simple and happy to live if expectations are based on reality. And life would be interesting if you discover yourself and understand the law of the universe. The moral of the story is that if you have realistic expectations, you can live this life to the fullest.
